Sylva & Cie
Leader of The New Jewels.
Sylva Yepremian is an artisan jewelry designer with more than twenty years of experience creating and manufacturing unique pieces for the discerning client. Developing at least one new piece of jewelry every day, fine jewelry designer Sylva Yepremian creates stunning, one-of-a-kind designs in which each piece starts as a simple rough sketch. Sylva’s passion for jewelry began at a young age and grew into what is now the globally-recognized fine jewelry house, Sylva & Cie.
Born in Lebanon and raised in Paris, at the age of sixteen, Sylva and her family moved to Los Angeles to run the family’s jewelry business. While Sylva always had an interest in the Fine Arts, she completed her baccalaureate studies in Languages. That said, Sylva’s father, Jirair worked in production for various prominent jewelry houses in Europe including Cartier Paris, and it was he who really inspired her as a child. Under his skilled tutelage Sylva received the proper training at the craftsman’s bench.
It was with this exposure and familial support that gave Sylva the confidence to launch her own brand. In 2007, Sylva Yepremian established the atelier Sylva & Cie in the heart of Los Angeles’ downtown jewelry district, creating contemporary collections in which no two pieces are alike, as each is completely and meticulously hand wrought with the utmost care and attention to detail.
An avid collector of antique jewelry, Sylva is continuously inspired by the art and design developed in previous decades. The Art Deco period in particular is a significant source of inspiration for her contemporary jewelry collection, but she is also enamored of the style and art created within the Georgian and Victorian eras.
Sylva draws from the past when designing, yet her collection embodies a modern edge that appeals to the sophisticated customer. She is able to strike the perfect balance within each composition – alluding to old world prestige along with an innovative and fresh approach to design.
Sylva’s collection is designed with a variety of precious stones and metals. She is infatuated with the richness of color found in rubies and emeralds, and the amazing dimension of rose cut diamonds. She also incorporates other materials such as fossilized mammoth, ancient coins, hand carved opal, jade, and brilliant citrine; Sylva pairs these rare finds with 18KT gold to create an impactful, yet harmonious design.
With just four collections made each year, Sylva’s jewelry has a timeless appeal that transcends trends and seasons. The collection has developed a cult following including Hollywood’s biggest celebrities such as, Jennifer Lawrence, Anne Hathaway, Katy Perry, and Kate Bosworth. Sylva & Cie collections are available at select retailers nationwide including Bergdorf Goodman, Saks Fifth Avenue, Mitchells, Neiman Marcus and Stanley Korshak, amongst others.

Masayoshi Takayama (Masa)
The Michelin Man
One of America’s most celebrated Japanese chefs, three Michelin-starred chef Masayoshi “Masa” Takayama continues to set high standards, consistently delivering memorable dining experiences while pursuing new directions for Japanese dining in America.
Chef Masa grew up in Nasu, a small town north of Tokyo, where his parents owned a fish shop and catering business. When he and his siblings were not in school, they loaded fish into the shop's display case and delivered their father's sashimi to customers by bicycle. Masa began cooking in his teens and was drawn to creative activities like drawing, painting, modeling clay and sculpting wood. Today, sketching and sculpture remain central to Masa's creative process, as does Masa Designs, the hand- crafted ceramics he designs and uses in the restaurants. After high school, Masa moved to Tokyo where he was hired by well-known sushi restaurant, Ginza Sushi-ko as a dishwasher. Intrigued by the genuine joy he perceived in diners at the restaurant, he began to develop an interest in the culinary craft. Before long, he had worked his way up to sushi chef.
Soon after, he relocated to Los Angeles, where he worked at a number of small Japanese restaurants before opening his own Ginza Sushi-ko in 1983. It quickly attracted a devoted following and a rare four- star review from Los Angeles Times. Masa became famous for sourcing the very best ingredients available and, in the early years, would fly to Tokyo's Tsukiji Fish Market himself after dinner service each Saturday.
Masa received an offer to open a restaurant in New York City's newly built Time Warner Center and left Los Angeles to open Masa and Bar Masa in 2004. Masa soon garnered four stars from The New York Times (the only Japanese restaurant to do so in 20 years) and three Michelin stars soon followed. In 2014, Masa opened contemporary Japanese restaurant Kappo Masa on the Upper East Side with renowned art dealer Larry Gagosian.
In 2017, Masa debuted Tetsu, a traditional Japanese robatayaki in the heart of New York City’s TriBeCa neighborhood and his first downtown restaurant. Designed by Masa himself, the restaurant was born out of personal desire—during his early days of working in New York, chef was constantly looking for a place to relax after a long shift. Inspired by this search, Tetsu will offer a menu of comforting robatayaki dishes and small plates along with Masa’s first-ever burger.
This March, Masa opened Basement, a kaiseki restaurant beneath Tetsu. Basement’s open kitchen and intimate dining room is chef Masa’s playground for a rotating menu of elaborate proteins such as whole squab, A5 Wagyu beef, Ohmi beef roast and whole fish displayed on beds of ice. Chef Masa’s menu and preparations vary nightly according to availability and seasonality with steamed, roasted, fried and grilled preparations that reflect his latest inspirations and creativity.
In each new restaurant venture and in every life activity Masa strives to balance his commitment to tradition and excellence with his artist's desire to explore and innovate. His culinary creations exemplify the Japanese notion of kaiseki—the art form that seeks to discover and express a natural balance of taste, texture, appearance and color of food
Caris Sports Foundation
Eliminating financial barriers for underprivileged youth to play sports.
Raquel McNabb, wife of 6x NFL Pro-Bowler and NFL commentator, Donovan McNabb, has formally launched a new philanthropic initiative: Caris Sports Foundation. This 501(c)(3) organization gives young people the opportunity to participate in organized sports by providing scholarship awards that remove financial obstacles that typically keep children on the sidelines.
For decades, studies have consistently shown that children who participate in sports are more likely to attend and graduate from college, earn more in their careers, and avoid drugs and criminal activity. This is in addition to the well documented physical and mental health benefits of participating in recreational and competitive sports. Such benefits include learning teamwork and problem solving to reach goals, gaining a sense of accomplishment, boosting self-esteem, and lessons on winning and losing with grace.
However, compounding financial considerations (fees, equipment, travel costs, etc.) often preclude families from lower-income backgrounds from incorporating club and competitive sports as an activity for children. The average cost for expenses associated with club sports is $2,500, while the cost associated with recreational club sports is $150. Caris Sports Foundation and its supporters will now provide scholarships to cover those expenses so that all young athletes are able to participate in sports.
“I was fortunate to be able to play both club and competitive sports throughout my youth and it changed the trajectory of my life,” said Donovan McNabb, Official Spokesperson for Caris Sports Foundation. “Access to sports shouldn’t be limited to those who have the financial resources to play. Income affects sports participation — we want to provide opportunities for all youths that want to play to be able to play, regardless of financial status.”
Participation at the club and competitive sports levels skew toward families that have a higher socioeconomic status. In fact, recent studies show that only 34 percent of kids aged 6 to 12 from families with a household income of $25,000 or less played team sports, compared to 69 percent of kids from families with household incomes of $100,000 or more. Caris Sports Foundation scholarships aim to level the playing field and create more opportunities for underprivileged youth to play sports.
Scholarship opportunities are currently open to full-time students in grades K-12 that are Arizona residents. Scholarships may be applied to any team sport, including but not limited to, football, baseball/softball, soccer, basketball, gymnastics, and hockey. With plans to expand to additional areas of the country forthcoming, 100 percent of funds raised will be distributed as scholarships.
“We are passionate about leveling the playing field so that all youth have an equal opportunity to play organized sports,” said Raquel McNabb, founder of Caris Sports Foundation. “We’re excited for families in Arizona, and across the country, to benefit from these scholarships.”
McNabb founded the charity alongside three other local mothers of athletes determined to help provide opportunities for the disadvantaged kids they witness in the club sports system: Ashley Schugg, Nicole Hawkins, and Jennifer Kruse. “Our goal is to reach those populations where the income is nonexistent without federal aid and go in there and provide outlets to these children...and start a movement,” said Ashley Schugg, Board Member, Caris Sports Foundation.

About Caris Sports Foundation:
At Caris Sports Foundation, we understand the power of sports and the many benefits that team sports provide.
