The Luxurious Sportsmanship

Aziz Shittu, Jr.was born July 27, 1994 in Merced, Calif., and graduated from Buhach Colony High School (Atwater, Calif.), where he lettered in football and basketball.  On the gridiron, he earned All-America honors on the Parade, Rivals, Sports Illustrated and SuperPrep teams and played in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl; Rivals.com ranked him as the nation’s 27th overall recruit (all positions) coming out of high school.  His first language is Yoruba, native to several countries in West Africa where his family originated from.  Full name is Abdulaziz Shittu, Jr. Shittu earned his bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Stanford in 2016.

Shittu, 25, joined the Buffaloes after he retired from professional football, as he signed as an undrafted free agent with the Philadelphia Eagles, and spent the 2016 season on the practice squad. After suffering a knee injury, he was placed on the team’s injured reserve list but was still a member of the Super Bowl XLII champion Eagles’ 2017 team that defeated New England.  He spent the 2018 in two different stints on the Dallas Cowboys and was resigned by Philadelphia just ahead of the 2019 season, but again was soon placed on injured reserve.

Aziz lettered four years (2012-15) at defensive tackle for Stanford University, playing for head coach David Shaw.  He recorded 78 career tackles (33 solo, five-and-a-half quarterback sacks), with three passes broken up, two fumble recoveries and one forced fumble.  He was a regular starter as a senior, when he was in on 58 of those tackles.  In Stanford’s 45-16 rout of Iowa in the 2016 Rose Bowl, he was named the Most Outstanding Defensive Player of the Game when he was in on 10 tackles, with eight solo, four for losses including two quarterback sacks, and a third down stop.  He earned first-team All-Pac-12 honors on the field as a senior, when he was also named to the first-team All-Academic Pac-12 team.

WP Standard

Companion Essentials

What We Do

We are makers of bags and accessories – trusted companions made with natural materials that get better with time. The wear your bag takes on will be as unique as your own fingerprint. Defects and repairs are covered for life. We’re in it for the long haul.

The Story

Leather takes time. This isn’t something that you’ve likely given much thought to. I certainly hadn’t when I landed in Mexico ten years ago. For thousands of years, after an animal has departed, the hide begins its second act. On this particular day, the hides of the animal have been salted and loaded onto a truck bound for the tannery. This is where I find myself. Let me back up a bit. After a string of failed careers including high school teacher, salesman, and guitar player, I decided to start a company making leather guitar straps. This is how I find myself on a loading dock in a cloud of flies unloading dead animal skins in late 2009 – the beginning of WP Standard.

As unpleasant as this all sounds, I find this next piece uplifting. The long process of transforming discarded flesh into a beautifully tanned hide. The journey of the hide is analogous to winemaking in many ways. If you’ve ever spent an afternoon in Napa Valley you’re familiar with terms like “terroir” and “tannins”. Leather is like this in that there are hundreds of variables from hide origins to tanning, tumbling, and finishing that end up in a final product that is completely unique (editors note: don’t take a date to a tannery). No two hides are the same and each batch has some variance in characteristics making your bag truly one of a kind.

From the tannery, we find our finished hides which are ready to be inspected, cut and sewn. This is a process we take great pride in and I’m humbled to see the work roll out from our artisans every day.

When I look at the bags that people carry around airports and cities, they are usually nylon or a pressed leather with not much character to it. But occasionally you’ll see something haggard and beautiful that has endured years of coffee stains, run-ins with rouge doors and leaky pens. This sets my imagination adrift. This is a bag, or rather a person with some stories to tell. And though buying some bag doesn’t automatically imbue life with good stories, perhaps it can be a humble reminder to make some.

Fabrizio Di Paolo

Freelance Fashion & Street Photography

Fabrizio Di Paolo, freelance fashion and street photographer, collaborates with newspapers, men’s fashion magazine and world renowned bloggers. Today one of the most followed Italian photographers of this fashion area on Instagram, especially during the events of Pitti Immagine Uomo.

If you ask me when and how I decided that I wanted to be a photographer I answer you that I believe destiny decided for me. When I was a child I always had an attraction for the camera. I still remember when at age of 3 running all over my house, taking pictures. Since then, things have not changed so much.
This is absolutely my dream job.

I consider myself a lucky person. Confucius said “Choose the job you love and you’ll never work, not even a day in your life”. I let myself be carried away by my instinct. When I shoot I enter a world of my own, where the photo that I will shoot it’s already etched in my mind. Everything is to capture precisely that moment.

On the day of my first show I was very happy and impressed by people’s appreciation of my work. Actually the thing I liked most was that everyone tried to “read” my pictures, everyone saw something different, different emotions coming up from my works. I thanked them for telling them that I would have appreciated every form of criticism because I’m convinced that it is a way of personal growth. Sometimes there is a single image whose compositional structure has such force and such wealth and the contents of which radiate so much out of it that this single picture is a whole story in itself.

The beauty of photography is that it gives you a way to take ideas and inspiration from anyone, no matter how famous. The list of the photographer I admire could be infinite but if I have to choose a name I would say Scott Schumann the one who is able to tell, through his camera, the largest fashion catwalk: everyday life.
